History: The past 8 years of the Bicycling Monterey website and projects

As reported by Kera Abraham in “The Change Agent” in the Monterey County Weekly’s first special bike issue in May 2011: “What started as Dehmler’s [Mari Lynch Dehmler’spersonal blog two years ago quickly evolved into an umbrella website for all things two-wheeled in Monterey County.”  Also begun in 2009 were some of the many other Bicycling Monterey projects, which include collaborations on local, regional, state, national, and international bicycling advocacy efforts.
  • As May 2017 closes and the start of the 9th year of this website and other Bicycling Monterey projects is underway, my thanks to all who are part of this grassroots collaboration. This has been an entirely volunteer gig for me since 2009, and I am grateful for all who help in providing this public service. For names of the helpers—who give volunteer time or just help get the word out, contribute project supplies, or contribute financially—scroll down the About/Support section.
  • In May 2009 Tips for Tourists Bicycling Monterey was published to encourage visitors to bike. Within months it expanded into a 20-section guide for local residents as well as tourists/visitors, Tips for Bicycling Monterey County. To prevent broken links, the guide’s original URL (with “tourists”) remains the same. In May 2009, I had no intention of launching a full-blown bike advocacy website plus Bicycling Monterey’s numerous additional projects (see a dozen examples). I simply saw a need and started to fill it. The Bicycling Monterey website grew to include by May 2017 over 550 posts and pages of original content, including thousands of original photos, providing inspiration and resources for people who bike anywhere. The site is now most commonly accessed via the domain name https://bikemonterey.org. Another option has been to use the original domain name, https://marilynch.com/blog. (About the original domain name: As reported by Kera Abraham in “The Change Agent” in the Monterey County Weekly’s first special bike issue in 2011: “What started as [Mari’s] personal blog two years ago quickly evolved into an umbrella website for all things two-wheeled in Monterey County.” To learn more about that original domain name, click here. There are some alternate domain names too, for people who remember things differently: http://bicyclingmonterey.com, http://bicyclingmonterey.org, and http://tipsfortourists.com.
