Got bike? Some Salinas High students do not–and want to ride with the cycling team!
October 24, 2023 update: The Salinas High School team now has the bicycles their students need (they no longer need bicycles donated).
Artsy, yes. But for most bikes, gathering dust and rust isn’t best use.
As of December 3, 2013: Three girls on the team are without race-worthy bikes. Please consider providing the wheels they need to increase their chances for success!
THE INFORMATION BELOW HAS NOT BEEN UPDATED.
Greetings_Friends_of_the_Salinas High Cowboys!
Do you have an old bike in the garage? A Salinas High student would love to blow the cobwebs off your old mountain bike, and take that bicycle–and themselves–to full potential. Your gift to the team of a used or new mountain bike is tax-deductible.
The Salinas High School Mountain Bike team isn’t an exclusive club for a limited sector of the population. It aims to be fully representative of the school’s culturally diverse population–and that’s exactly what’s happening!
Who’s on the team?
For the 2012-2013 school year, the team had 24 riders. Each year of its 6 years in existence, the team has grown by a few students each year. But for the 2013-2014 school year, the numbers have more than doubled!
As of October 8, 2013, there are 53 interested students–yes, more than twice the number of last year! And when we’re talking about a diverse team, that not only includes culturally diverse, it also includes that the team isn’t just made up of boys! In the past, perhaps 1-2 new girls signed up each year. Last year, the team lost 4 graduating senior girls, leaving the team with only 3 girls. But for the 2013-2014 school year, something new has happened: 14 new girls signed up, for a total of 17 girls among the 53 students signed up to ride! [Update: 41 riders competed at the 3/9/14 Granite Bay race. Click here for details.]
Bikes for teens + teens’ dedication = successful team members
The team has several incoming riders whose families are unable to purchase a bike. The team requests donations of good, serviceable mountain bikes and road bikes—used or new. With more girls on the team, small and medium sized bikes are especially needed. For more info, please contact the team. Refer to contact info in section 7 of Bicycling Monterey’s directory of Monterey County bicycling resources; click here.
Thanks to National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) for being among those already responding by getting two great bikes to the Salinas High team!
