Fort Ord Trails Symposium – Regional Trails, Transit & Economic Vitality

Bike advocates and the general public are encouraged to attend this free event at California State University Monterey Bay on Thursday, 1/22/15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

National urban and trail design professionals will discuss how communities around the nation turn bike, pedestrian and equestrian infrastructure investment into regional economic engines.

Keynote speaker is Mia Birk, author of “Joyride: Pedaling Toward a Healthier Planet,” the behind-the-scenes story of how a group of determined visionaries transformed Portland into a bicycling mecca. Additional speakers include People for Bikes President Tim Blumenthal, formerly executive director of the International Mountain Bicycling Association; and Peter Katz, Laura Thompson, Dena Belzer, John Wentworth, and Bryan D. Jones.

As stated in the Fort Ord Reuse Authority (FORA) 1/13/15 press release, “With significant open space available at former Fort Ord and within many existing county and city areas, outdoor recreation and the enhancement of non-motorized alternatives for recreation and daily transportation are becoming more popular, desirable, and necessary.”

Event supporters include California State University of Monterey Bay (CSUMB) County of Monterey, Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC), and U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
