Yes, rain or shine, Sat, Nov 1!

Ciclovía Salinas is for all ages and abilities–to walk, bike, roll in a wheelchair, skateboard, roller-blade, or enjoy other people-powered transportation,  fun activities, and visiting on 1.6 miles of car-free streets!

This post highlights Info Booth locations, activities, and some other snippets about 11/1/14. It also includes video and audio invitations to Ciclovía Salinas.
For the Ciclovía Salinas website, click here.

Information Booths: There will be four along the November 1 route. These booths will be on Alisal Street at: (1) Salinas Street; (2)  Wood; (3) Madeira; and (4) Sanborn Road. The route becomes car-free at 10 a.m.  It reopens to motor vehicles  beginning with the east end (Sanborn to Madeira) at 1:30 p.m., and reopens to vehicles on the west end at 2 p.m.

To enter drawings for raffle prizes, pick up a free activities “passport” at one of the four Information Booths. As are the Ciclovía Salinas etiquette and poster, the passports will be available in Spanish and English. Tell your friends! Among raffle prizes is a bicycle from the Specialized Allez series.

Patronize businesses along the route: A free valet parking station will be available for bicycles, bike trailers, wagons, strollers, joggers, etc. This will make it easier to stop and shop, dine, or otherwise get acquainted with local businesses along the route. The valet service also makes it easier to participate in the open-air free exercise classes and such. Thanks to Green Pedal Couriers and friends for providing this helpful amenity.

What sorts of activities will you find along the route on Nov 1? Kids’ Zone with Tricycles, Wheelie Mobilee, Book Mobile; Salsa Classes; Zumba; Folklorico Classes; Soccer Clinic; Bike Polo demonstrations; Face Painting; Cheerleading Clinic; and Live Music, Art, and more.

Below, in a 48-second video produced by J.V. Guajardo, hear Reyna Alcala, Todd Williams, and Ruben Gonzalez introduce Ciclovía Salinas.

From the Alisal to Oldtown, Ciclovía Salinas connects neighborhoods and people.
As Todd Williams, an Oldtown business proprietor says in the  video, “It encourages people from all walks of life to come out and interact with each other…”

That’s what happens  on 1.6 miles of Alisal Street–free of motor vehicles–in Salinas, our county seat and largest city. How? Because of a youth-led initiative,  Ciclovía Salinas, the first Open Streets in Monterey County.

(The route on 1 Nov 2014 will be the same route as on 6 Oct 2013.)IMG_0888

Hear what they have to say, including…

Reyna: “Having fun…being healthy…using their streets…feeling safe.”

Todd: “…an even playing field.”

Ruben: “People from one side of town go into the other  side of town, and they see the beauty that both sides have to offer. It unites one community, Salinas is one whole, not different sections.”
