City of Monterey – Free Bicycle Rodeo and Bike Helmet for Ages 8-12

NOTE: Most people agree that that children up to about age 13 don’t yet have the ability to judge vehicle speed and distance that would allow them to bike safely in the street. See Bicycling Monterey’s “Children and Teens Growing Up Bikewise in Monterey County” and “Bicycling on Sidewalks: Misconceptions and advisories.”

Thanks to the City of Monterey for providing the info below.

On Sunday, May 15, 2016, Monterey residents are invited to bring their kids ages 8 to 12 for a free, hands-on bike rodeo and helmet giveaway!

Children will begin to learn the rules of the road and bicycle safety skills using a real life simulated skills course. Children need parent or legal guardian’s consent to participate in the bike rodeo.

Over 500 free bicycle helmets will be fitted and provided to event participants, free of charge. Quantities and sizes limited. One helmet per child. Child must be present to receive helmet.

Bike rodeo instructors will be from Bike Smart, a program of Ecology Action of Santa Cruz.
