For visitors and locals of all ages and abilities, Ciclovía Salinas is a very special experience. People can ride in a wagon, roll in a wheelchair, bicycle, walk, skateboard, rollerblade, dance, or otherwise move about on streets free of motor vehicle traffic. For four hours, about a mile and a half of public streets are set aside for this event. Many special activities take place along the route as well. These have included music, yoga, zumba, dance classes, soccer clinics, community resource booths, youth bicycle helmet giveaways, and much more.

Ciclovía Salinas remains an annual event for now. Sunday, October 9, 2016, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. is the eagerly awaited fourth date.
Ciclovía Salinas is a great way to discover or rediscover neighborhood businesses too. And of course, to simply get to know the community and its guests. Whether you’re a visitor or a local, this Open Streets event is a unique opportunity to experience Salinas, the Monterey County seat and its largest city, including culturally rich East Salinas.
Monterey County roads don’t all lead to Peninsula cities and Big Sur, as reminded in the two-minute audio in this post (scroll down). Listen to get a sense of why people are excited about the Ciclovía Salinas dates.
Ciclovía Salinas is a youth-led initiative. Follow Ciclovía Salinas on social media and get on their email list too. Contact info is at http://bit.ly/CicloviaSalinas, where you’ll also find resources that include—in English y en español—the Ciclovía Salinas Open Streets etiquette; a summary about Ciclovía Salinas (who, what, when, where); how it happens; and history, including photo galleries and links to inaugural year acknowledgements and all other Ciclovía Salinas posts on the Bicycling Monterey website.

Volunteering
Hundreds of people have volunteered to help make Ciclovia Salinas dates happen. Among them, as shown in the Californian ad above, are bike community leaders, including Mari Lynch, Bicycling Monterey; Salinas Bike Party; Monterey Off Road Cycling Association; Highway 68 Hillbillies; Green Pedal; and (inadvertently omitted from the ad but responsible for contributing many barricade volunteers), Velo Club Monterey!
Volunteer tasks include that adults (must be 18 or older) are needed to serve as barricade volunteers. Contact Ciclovia Salinas and offer to volunteer or otherwise support the October 9, 2016 event.

Health-building aspects of Open Streets
For his Community Health Reporting Project 9/27/16 column in the Salinas Californian, Jeff Mitchell interviewed Dr. Dana Kent and Dr. John Silva of Natividad Medical Center about why they support Ciclovia Salinas. Click here to read Jeff’s column on the Californian website.
