Complete Streets in California: Survey on state-controlled roads

Update: Survey results published by CalBike on Nov 13 https://www.calbike.org/results-from-calbikes-complete-streets-survey/.

Respond by Tuesday, October 10, 2023 (deadline extended from October 6) to a survey from the California Bicycle Coalition aka CalBike about California’s state-controlled routes that also serve as surface streets in local neighborhoods. Here’s a link to the survey:

Why is CalBike seeking your input about streets controlled by the state (i.e., by California Department of Transportation aka Caltrans)? Background: https://www.calbike.org/contribute-to-calbike-complete-streets-research/.

Why does CalBike care so much about Caltrans living up to its promises to consider the needs of people who bike and walk?

Here’s just one example, from Alameda County. On September 6, 2023, a father, husband, mechanical engineer, and bicycle commuter, Chris Pena, was killed when a driver struck Chris with a motor vehicle on Mission Boulevard in Hayward, also known as California State Route 238. That route is among the Alameda County routes that CalBike is seeking input on in its Complete Streets survey.

Among Monterey County’s state-controlled streets are Merritt Street (Route 183) in Castroville, Canyon Del Rey Blvd (Route 218) in Del Rey Oaks and Seaside, and more. As you’ll see if you select the Monterey County drop-down in the survey https://form.jotform.com/CalBikeCoalition/completestreets, CalBike is specifically interested in input on the following Monterey County routes:

  • Route 68: S. Main Street / John Street in Salinas
  • Route 146: Metz Road in Soledad
  • Route 183: Market Street in Salinas
  • Route 198: John McVeigh, Jr. Memorial Hwy in San Lucas

Don’t see your route listed? Submit feedback on the rural routes survey.

Below, a photo from Market Street in Salinas, the street where Rogelio Vásquez López was killed on March 26, 2015. Rogelio was riding a bicycle on Market when a driver made an unsafe turn into a gas station at the Market and Kern intersection and struck Rogelio with his truck.

Complete the survey https://form.jotform.com/CalBikeCoalition/completestreets to give input to CalBike on state-controlled routes in Monterey County or any California county where you bike, walk, use public transportation, or drive.
