Monterey Cyclists Extraordinaire

11/16/11 update:  Get an idea of Charlie’s experience by viewing “Bicycle Dreams.”

Recognize these guys?

If you read “Knights of the Central Coast,” you know about the strong support that Devian Gilbert and Charlie Humphrey—along with their racing compatriot Steve Anderson—gave to a cycling family with three young children.  Devian, Charlie, and Steve served as personal guides for the Pedouins (AKA Harrison Family) when the family was in Monterey County last March.

The Harrison Family rolls through Fort Ord,
assisted by Charles Humphrey and Devian Gilbert of the Velo Club Monterey racing team.

You may also have read here about the California premiere of the award-winning film “Ride the Divide” on opening night of the 20th Anniversary Sea Otter Classic.  The film was about the Tour Divide, and Devian–owner of Asana Cycles–is now tackling that challenging ride.

As for Charlie, he’s taking off to Race Across America, alongside a 12-year-old who has been diagnosed with liver disease.  Learn more about how Charlie came to be making this race at the Velo Club Monterey website.

Details, and an opportunity to celebrate these local heroes…

For the scoop on both their trips, check out Velo Monterey’s site.

And if you’re so inclined, you may support the efforts of these cyclists—both Devian Gilbert and Charlie Humphrey—by making a donation via links provided at Velo Monterey.

June 24, 2010 update: Congratulations to both guys for their incredible accomplishments!  Devian completed 1,034 miles of the self-supported Tour Divide on June 22, exhausted but happy.  Charlie crossed the finish line with Team Donate Life – Connor’s Hope in 6 days, riding 3,005 miles with his team.  For more of their stories, please visit the Velo Club Monterey website.

  2. Hi Mari:

Thank you so much for the kind words, and your efforts in supporting the Monterey Cycling Community.
I know this sounds so cliche but Monterey truly is a special place. From a cycling perspective, the locale is PRIMO! Clean air, the car traffic is not too bad, the cycling infrastructure is decent, and the local cycling camaraderie is amazing.
Monterey is the perfect place to ride your bike!

    Sincerely,
    Devian Gilbert
