The info below was first published June 24, 2010.

BLUE:  A Global Oceans Film & Conservation Summit is happening in Monterey County.

Bicycle to events–help reduce oil runoff in Monterey Bay

Festival goers–whether visitors or local residents–are encouraged to bicycle to events.   This helps keep oil runoff, brake dust, deposited vehicle exhaust and more out of the beautiful, life-giving Monterey Bay and otherwise benefits the environment.  See “Bicycling and Ecotourism” section of Tips for Bicycling Monterey County for more details.

There are plenty of other good reasons to bike here, including avoiding traffic and parking challenges, seeing the beauty of this area up close and personal, and more.   See “Why Bike” section.

If you’re a visitor and didn’t BYOB (bring your own bicycle),  rentals for a variety of ages and abilities are available.

The temperatures are starting out hot, for Monterey County, on the first day of the BLUE Ocean Film Fest.  If you would like to bike,  are a day visitor, and don’t think you have access to a shower to freshen up for later activities…we’ve got you covered!  See “Where to Shower and Change.”

Just can’t bicycle to all the places you want to go?  No problem!  Consider our bike-and-ride options.

Monterey County is on its way to becoming one of the most bicycling friendly places in the nation, and you’ll find unexpected amenities here, such as bicycle valet parking.

Ride a bike on BLUE’s third day and save money

Biking every day of the festival is an eco-wise way to travel.   And on  Thursday of BLUE week –as on every Thursday, year-round–Monterey County businesses and organizations reward you for helping our environment by giving discounts just because you bike here!

Participants in the HER Helmet Thursdays project (HER is an acronym for Hotels, Educational/Entertainment venues, and Restaurants–and related places) give discounts to cyclists, both male and female.  And the detailed listings have bike-there tips to help you bicycle to participating locations.

HER Helmet Thursdays….hmm…why the helmet?  It works like magic at the E and R spots:  walk in with your bike helmet in hand on a Thursday, and–bingo!–get a discount, any time of day or night, just because you biked there.   (The helmet simply serves as evidence.)

For the H/Hotels/lodging spots, to receive a discount on your Thursday night stay, simply BYOB (bring your own bicycle), or rent one for a day or longer in Monterey County, then show a copy of your rental agreement or receipt.
