Safe Routes to School: Parking lots and pick-up zones
Back on February 7, 2014, at the invitation of the Monterey County Health Department, Bicycling Monterey’s founder made a presentation to the Safe Routes to School Committee at King Elementary in Seaside. Sadly, attendees didn’t have any interest yet in promoting walking and biking to school.
It makes sense that King’s SRTS committee had a more urgent priority: The #1 concern of parents and educators at this 2014 meeting was that many parents and others were driving too fast in the school’s parking lots and pick-up zones!
More than a decade later, local schools still struggle to get drivers to be attentive and cautious in school parking lots and pick-up zones. The photo below was shot September 18, 2024.
