North Fremont, Monterey bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure changes, including Class IV lanes

See Bicycling Monterey’s 12/13/19 post Why get involved in infrastructure planning: North Fremont, Monterey— and other projects.”

The photo directly below shows construction progress as of August 30, 2019. Note the installation of the unusual signage that directs people on bicycles to use the crosswalk if turning.

Avoid confusion! Learn about crosswalk use in conventional settings; refer to “Bicycling on Sidewalks: Misconceptions and Advisories,” which includes—in its Step 4— crosswalk info.

City of Monterey plans to place information on their website on how to use North Fremont Street’s Class IV bike lanes, which are the first Class IV lanes of their type (within a median) in California. Check the city’s project web page later for educational updates: https://monterey.org/City-Hall/Featured-Projects/The-NFremont-Bike-and-Pedestrian-Access-and-Safety-Improvements-Project. Monterey currently (as of 8/30/19) has just one person for their entire traffic staff.
On September 14, 2019 from 1-2 p.m., in the CVS parking lot, a Grand Opening celebration of the new North Fremont Street will take place. Details on the city’s project web page (linked above).

Note our 9/14/19 tweet in the thread below. It clears up the inaccurate info from the Monterey County Weekly’s 9/11/19 story (mentioned in our 9/11/19 tweet directly below). The Weekly’s writer reported that the North Fremont “bike path is meant for bikers and on-foot pedestrians.” It is not, as our 9/14 tweet and photo show.

The photo below shows construction progress as of March 21, 2019. Beneath it, learn about this unusual Class 4 project.

From a 3/26/19 story by Caitlin Conrad for KSBW, “Broadway Avenue got a revamp in 2018. The construction was not popular at the time but now businesses are happy with the new look and improved pedestrian and bicycle safety.”

As reported June 25, 2018 by David Schmalz in the Monterey County Weekly, the City of Monterey was celebrating upcoming North Fremont transportation infrastructure improvements with a groundbreaking ceremony on June 26.

Among infrastructure changes to be made: addition of Class IV bike lanes adjacent to North Fremont medians, and bike signals and bicycle-protected intersections at Casa Verde (which leads to the Monterey County Fair & Event Center), Casanova Ave, Dela Vina Ave / Airport Rd, and Ramona Ave.

Hmmm….”easier and safer” was the goal but didn’t quite turn out to be the case. See our 12/13/19 post to learn more: https://bikemonterey.org/why-get-involved-in-infrastructure-planning-north-fremont-monterey-and-other-projects.html

Among ways to advocate for infrastructure improvements is through participating in activities of the Transportation Agency for Monterey County bicycle and pedestrian facilities advisory committee (“bike-ped committee”). Attend meetings as a visitor or committee member, or just get on the email list to stay informed, so you can give input as important decisions are being made: http://www.tamcmonterey.org/contact/information-request-form/
