As Safe Routes to School, Bicycling Monterey, and many other bike advocates emphasize: Safe Routes is about more than infrastructure improvements!


March for Our Lives solidarity events on Saturday, March 24, 2018 include March for Our Lives Monterey.

This event will take place regardless of weather, “rain or shine.” Times below are approximate.
Please read and respect the Code of Conduct provided below for Monterey marchers by Alexander Judd.
  • 10 a.m. Meet up at Window on the Bay Park in Monterey.
  • 10:30 a.m. (approx) – March to Colton Hall will begin. En route to Colton Hall, a veterans group is coordinating monitors to help ensure marchers walk on sidewalks, and cross streets safely.
  • 11:15 a.m.-11:30 a.m. (approx) – March for Our Lives will reach Colton Hall (site pictured in May 2016 photo here).
  • 11:30 p.m. – 2 p.m. At Colton Hall, two tables will be set up where people can register to vote. There will also be materials providing an easy opportunity to write postcards to public officials.
  • 11:30 a.m – 12:30 p.m. (approx) – March for Our Lives speakers will address those at Colton Hall.
  • 2 p.m. – Scheduled event end-time at Colton Hall. (March participants can disperse from Colton Hall at the time most convenient for them.)

March for Our Lives – Monterey

Bike-there notes for Monterey marchers: 

If you prefer to keep your bicycle with you during the march, please walk your bicycle (do not ride it) while accompanying marchers. Bicycling Monterey encourages people with bicycles to consider marching at the end of the group, to avoid the chance of their bicycle bumping into another marcher. Thank you.
If you’re riding your bike (or using a bike-and-ride option) only to reach the meet-up location or rally site, note the bike parking tips below.

Whenever you’re riding in Monterey, be a good ambassador for biking. Follow CA bike laws and safe riding practices. Bike law summary: Be Cool, Be Safe – bike law summary. Youth (under 18) are required by CA law to wear bicycle helmets. See Bicycling Monterey’s “Bicycling on Sidewalks: Misconceptions and Advisories. Also: Crosswalks, and ‘What Pedestrians and Bicyclists Want Each Other to Know.” In the City of Monterey, bicycling on sidewalks is legal in most locations, but it is prohibited in certain areas (i.e., on Alvarado Street and on Calle Principal) where “signs are in place giving notice thereof,” per Section 22-12 .

Bicycle parking tips

Window on the Bay (meet-up location) is located directly along the coastal bike/multi-use path. If you’re able, considering using a bicycle or bike-and-ride option to reach Window on the Bay. See http://bit.ly/BicycleSecurity for theft-prevention tips.

Colton Hall (rally site) – You may prefer to lock up your bike near Colton Hall, then walk to meet people at Window on the Bay to march with them. If using the racks at Monterey Public Library (kitty corner from Colton Hall), be aware that bike racks at rear of the library are more subject to theft/vandalism than those in front.
