Smart Cycling Complete description

“Vehicular bicycling” is the practice of riding bicycles on roads in a manner that is in accordance with the principles for driving in traffic. The Smart Cycling Complete class includes tips and techniques that increase the benefits of vehicular bicycling (occasionally referred to as “bicycle driving”) and increase one’s ability to stay safer while bicycling.

Smart Cycling Complete includes two sections:

  • Section 1, online self-guided instruction
  • Section 2, On-Bike Skill Class, is parking lot and on-road practice of vehicular bicycling principles

Section 1: Online

Complete the FREE online self-guided Smart Cycling course available at https://learn.bikeleague.org/. The online course ends with an exam, and if successfully completed, a Certificate of Completion. Note the FAQs https://learn.bikeleague.org/faqs.

The Certificate of Completion must be sent to the Section 2 (On-Bike Skills class) instructor, or brought to that class. Electronic certificates are acceptable.

Section 2: On-Bike Skills Class (July 13 in Marina)

The On-Bike Skills Class begins with a two-hour review of the Section 1 online course material.

The on-bike portion of the class is also approximately two hours and will require a bicycle and helmet (helmet required for all ages). It will begin with a bicycle safety check, followed by a skills demonstrations and practice, then conclude with a road course.

The League’s Smart Cycling Manual is available for reference and can be requested with registration. The July 13 instructor can provide electronic pdf copies of the manual. (The instructor can also bring on July 13 print copies, for in-class review of illustrations, etc., but the print copies will be earlier editions of the manual.)
